Daddy’s Maybe is an inspiring drama about teen pregnancy told from the male perspective. Playwright-director Sandra D. Hodge says she got her inspiration for the play from the unfortunate fact that, too often, public perception is that all black fathers shirk fatherhood responsibilities.
She says, “I’m hoping that not just men, but everybody will realize that every man is not a dead beat dad, and that there are guys who are out there fighting to see their children, fighting to be with them and to raise their children. This play highlights and celebrates the men who are working hard to do the right thing. So often the deadbeat dad gets all the press.”
The play is among more that 50 selected from about 340 plays to be presented in the 2012 DC Black Theatre Festival. It is one of the opening night performances. More than 125 performances of urban and traditional plays will be presented in the eight day run of the festival.
Regular Media Matters Etc. readers will recall hearing from the director on this site in interviews with black filmmakers. Check that post under the film category and learn more about the playwright by clicking on The Gallery page.
