Today, I remain sad and shocked about the terror that took place in the Century Theater multiplex in Aurora, Colorado just after midnight on July 20.
My heart, condolences and prayers go out to every person directly or indirectly involved in any way with the injury, mayhem and murder that took place last Friday. It is difficult to imagine what the victims and their families and friends must be going through at this time.
This website focuses on mass media, and film is such a huge and extremely important media segment; not only in itself, but also in how it intersects with other media and, in turn, with our daily lives.
To think that film buffs and families can no longer count on a safe and entertaining night of fun at the movies is terrorizing in the meanest way. I went in search of a few wise words that might help make this tragedy a bit easier to understand. But the injury and loss in this most recent and insane gun violence is simply unspeakable.
The expressions below come from Thomas Campbell (1777-1844; 21st Century Dictionary of Quotations, 1993, Dell Publishing) They hold much truth and may be helpful in some way. Still, it will be quite some time before any of us, especially the loved ones of those killed or injured, and the injured themselves, will extract much meaning from any words.
On immortality Campbell writes:
To live in hearts we leave/Is not to die.
Many people are left to endure the pain of loss at so many levels. On endurance the Scottish poet says:
To bear is to conquer our fate.
